What is Anemia?
Anemia, also known as low hemoglobin, occurs when the body fails to produce enough healthy red blood cells. These red blood cells are needed to carry oxygen throughout the body. A decrease in red blood cells causes the body to be deprived of oxygen. Lack of oxygen to the body’s tissue and vital organs can have damaging effects.
There are over 400 types of anemia, and they are categorized into three separate categories:
- Anemia caused by blood loss
- Anemia caused by decreased or defective red blood cell production
- Anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells
Anemia can range in severity and duration depending on each individual case. In most cases of anemia there is more than one cause of the disorder.
Symptoms of anemia can range from none to severe and often include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Weakness
Anemia is more common in women of child-bearing age, children, people with chronic health issues, and the elderly. If left untreated, anemia can cause serious health problems and is potentially fatal.
