HOW TO BOOK A TREATMENT
What are Migraines?
A migraine is more than a bad headache. This neurological disorder often begins in childhood, but it can continue throughout a person’s life. Hours or even days before a migraine begins, sufferers begin to experience warning symptoms. These may include:
- Light, sound, or smell sensitivity
- Change in appetite (such as lack of appetite or food cravings)
- Extreme thirst
- Mood sensitivity
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Fatigue
- Changes in vision (such as seeing lights or temporary blindness)
- Numbness or a heavy feeling in your body, such as your arms and legs
- Slurred speech
Once a migraine begins, the symptoms worsen. Migraines usually begin as a dull ache that gradually grows until the pain is unbearable. Physical activity makes the migraine worse, often causing sufferers to feel trapped.
Migraines last about 4 hours, but they can also persist for days. Worse, they can strike several times per month. Every person seems to have their own “schedule” for how often and intense migraines appear. Some common risk factors for migraines are:
- Sex: Women have more migraines than men
- Age: Most people who have migraines start between ages 10 and 40, but they can stop with age
- Medical Conditions: Mental health conditions such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, and sleep disorders can contribute to migraines
- Genetics: 80% of people with migraines also have relatives who get them
The pain continues even after the migraine is over. For a day after the headache, sufferers can feel exhausted, achy, and even depressed.
The actual cause of migraines is unknown. But recent research indicates migraines are related to overactive nerve cells causing blood vessels in the brain to swell.
While over the counter medications can help, depending on the migraine’s severity, oral medications are often not enough for severe migraine headaches. Fortunately, infusion therapy for migraines provides an effective, convenient way to treat and prevent migraine headaches.
